Mastering the Seeds of Thoughts

Feelings and actions begin from thoughts Mark 7:20-23

And a heart not circumcised will produce evil. Romans 2:29

A heart circumcised loves the Lord Deuteronomy 30:6

Pause and Pray: Lord, circumcise my heart by Your Spirit. Take away the foreskin that veils me from obeying your Word. I surrender this day the your work of purging, purification, and sanctification. Let me love you with all that is within me by your great grace in Jesus name.

Several times we are overtaken by our thoughts. Our responses, actions and inactions are all consequences of our heart choices and thoughts.

Keep thy heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life Proverbs 4:23

Journal Prompt

Do a Verse Study on the scripture above. Search out meanings of “diligence” and “to keep”.

Make a list of issues of life that relate to you. What thoughts do you have concerning them?

This verse encourages us to mind our thoughts. You can control of negative thoughts or battles going on in your mind. Thoughts are projected via circumstances heard, perceived, or seen and are amplified through worry, anxiety, anger, etc.

What we are thinking either produces life or consumes us. Notice how some thoughts keep us angry. Years later you find that when those thoughts are triggered, the same feelings overpower us yet again. Why?

We have taught ourselves to respond to certain people’s names, specific places or memories have been attached with negativity, anger and the whole body system reacts accordingly – stress, tension, unhappiness, frustration, worry, malice, bitterness, pride, unforgiveness, fear, unbalanced health parameters etc

Journal prompt

What thoughts are you bringing to captivity?

What are you programming your mind to do with certain thoughts?

Notice how the scripture says “keeping our hearts with all diligence”? Until we are intentional about mastering our thoughts with spiritual discipline that comes from the Word, we are playing with a lethal fire.

We are encouraged to guard our hearts against unholy thoughts. Why? God hears our hearts Psalm 139:1-2. He knows when we are going down the sinful path.

In our earlier discussion, we saw how Cain’s murderous act was a manifestation of his hateful, envious, and vengeful thought. We know his end.

You want joy get intentional about sowing godly thought seeds. God’s Word produces joy in your soul.

How then do we keep our hearts?

Thankfully, God does not leave us without a principle to follow on every life issue.

  1. Examine your Thought life. Let’s head straightway to Philippians 4:8 and see what it says about thinking and thoughts

This is a checklist to assess your thought

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

Am I dwelling on the Truth? Are my feeling honest or do I hide a hidden motive? Is my current assessment of a person’s behaviour towards me true or is it mere presumption?

Is this Honest? Romans 13:13 and Romans 12:17

Are my responses “Just”? Is there justice in my response? 2 Samuel 23:3

Is this “Lovely”? Is there compassion and love in this?

Is there “Virtue, Honour and Praise”?

On the overall, is this acceptable before God?

Pursuing a thought pattern that pleases God is our ultimate guide to “guard our hearts”.

God’s Word is like a mirror, which reflects our heart. And the Holy Spirit searches our thoughts.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting Psalm 139:23-24

When we hold it up, we weigh our life actions on the balances of the Word. It exposes and convicts us of our weaknesses and equips us to overcome.

b) Our thoughts should not be directed at worry which causes anxiety, panic and anger. Matthew 6:25 because is able to meet all our needs and satisfy our soul Ephesians 3:20-21

c) Acknowledge places of wrong: The Word is for our correction, 2 Timothy 3:16.

d) Dispose of the filthy garbage making us stink before God. As we run checks on our thought life with the Word, we are able to throw out ungodly thoughts.

Let the wicked forsake his way, and unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon Isaiah 55:7

Words of Affirmation.

The Lord sets me free from sinful thoughts

I choose to dwell on godly and fruitful thoughts

My thoughts are acceptable in the eyes of the Lord

Action Plan.
