Thankful For the ‘Very Ordinary’

‘I just want to know what the wooden chips in the bowl was. I have seen you eat those’ he said.

My eyes were wide with shock of what the young man asked. ‘What do you mean?’ Wanting to clear myself of every assumption.
‘Please don’t be embarrassed. I don’t know what it is’. He replied.

His disposition gave away his sincerity.
‘Ok it is called Cornflakes!’

Satisfying his curiosity, he made an exit.

…friends I reclined into my office chair thought deeply about what just happened.

Friends, I am not ashamed to say that incident took my thankful attitude to a whole new altitude.

Be Thankful For the Very Ordinary Things In Your Life

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with
benefits, even the God of our salvation.
Psalm 68:19

The Lord grants us daily graces,

God gives us daily benefits,

He pours on us daily blessings.

I began to thank God for every little bit of thing in my life including ‘cornflakes’. What ‘Cornflakes’ are you grateful for?
This could be the people, the things or the events around you.

I learnt to be thankful for every chip of cornflakes in plate. I learnt that what seems like ordinary is someone’s miracle.

Yes dear friend, the broken car in your garage, the old toys and clothes, the littlest room in your apartment, the out of vogue, shoes and household items, running water in your home, garden of flowers… all of it and loads more is someone’s dream come true.

In that encounter, God showed me how thankfulness
can be seen in small but awesome ways.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Psalm 100:4-5 KJV

Let’s take our thankfulness to another level.

This thanksgiving month…instead facing the circumstances, face the seemingly ‘very ordinary’ daily miracles.

Think about all the ordinary things in your daily life you certainly don’t pay for or pray for.

Think about the very ordinary things that beg for you to notice them.

Think about the ‘ordinary people’ too you take for granted.

Be thankful for them.

Count your blessings.

By His Great Grace,
Ifeoma Samuel

  • What a great reminder to be thankful for the “ordinary” things. That’s what most of our life is…ordinary things. Like, leftovers in my refrigerator for lunch, clean socks in my dresser drawers, the lights working on my Christmas tree…

  • Yes! This is so true. We have to remember to not take EVERY blessings for granted and to be thankful in ALL things! Good reminder! Thanks for sharing!

    God bless,
    Patty

  • Wow. That does make one think!
I hope you have a very focused and blessed Christmas!

  • I absolutely love this and I so agree. Even when things are going great, we should still be mindful and thankful for the ordinary 🙂 Such a wonderful reminder!

    Stopping by from Saturday Sharefest!

  • We have so much to be thankful for. Thank you for this sweet reminder today. Stopping by from Five Minute Friday (#6).

    Blessings and joy,

  • I've been doing the 1000 gifts thankful posts each day (Ann Voskamp http://annvoskamp.com/ann-voskamp/) for a few years now. Even when I find a repeated prompt, I can find new things to be thankful for. What has surprised me has been the number of people who have come to me and said, "I look forward to reading your thankful posts each day!" We never know who we are blessing!

  • So true, my friend.
Every little thing is a gift.

  • May God bless you in your thanksgiving for His gifts!

    Very Beautifully worded.
Even cornflakes and the ordinary mundane becomes dazzling in the light of gratitude. Thanks for the inspiring post xx

Amen. I like how you pointed out ordinary daily miracles. Everyday is a miracle. Our life is a miracle. Oh, there is so much to be thankful for…gifts of abundance each day! I just wrote about my favorite thanksgiving story as well. 🙂

  • I love this, Ifeoma! We have so much to be thankful for, even those very ordinary things we take for granted. Thank you for this wonderful reminder and for sharing with Thankful Thursdays.

  • Great post, Ifeoma! I love your comment that "what seems like ordinary is someone’s miracle." It is important to keep that in mind and to be thankful for the little things.

  • I'm currently in a season of writing down at least one thing I'm grateful for every day and just a quick paragraph as to why that thing is special to me. it's amazing how this simple exercise changes your perspective and causes you to see how greatly you really are blessed if you just open your eyes to what you already have. thanks for your post

  • "I learnt that what seems like ordinary is someone’s miracle." love this, friend. It is all so true and easy to take things for granted. I am glad God places people in our lives to help us get perspective.

  • These are such very good thoughts to dwell on during our official "THANKSGIVING" holiday here in the States. Especially this: "all of it and loads more is someone’s dream come true" jumped out at me today. There are so many gifts from God in our lives that we overlook or forget! He is always taking such good care of us, and we have so much to be thankful for! Thanks for this good reminder! –Blessings and Hugs to you my friend!

  • Yes. Ifeoma…the cornflakes are such a beautiful picture of the everyday type of 'thing' we need to be grateful for. I thought of, upon reading this, that I am grateful for the resale/thrift stores where I can get clothing for far less than retail, for the weekly time I spend with a family of 4 children where they homeschool. I go to help the youngest who is struggling a bit and they cannot pay me my tutoring wages but I love this family so that it does not need to be a payment in money but they pay me in love and hugs and words and a loaf of homemade bread. Yes, the little things make this world go 'round! Thank you, thank you.
