I was out cleaning up around the house. It wasn’t long my daughter joined me. She took out the mats in the car and began to clean them up. Soon we began an interesting conversation.
“Mummy, who are the princes?” she asked.
“What princes?” I replied trying to understand the source of the question.
“The princes in Psalm 118:9”.
She had been studying her Psalms for a while before joining me for the Good Morning Girls Book of Mark Study.
The scripture she referred to was Psalm 118:13. Put not confidence in princes.
I thought for a while so I could give an answer relevant to her. Princes are people or could be things you trust. They are people you believe will never fail you.
But why is the Bible telling me not to trust them? She probed further.
“That is because they may not be there when you need them the most”.
“Oh I see!” she responded. As she drifted into other talking points, I pondered on that scripture.
Who are the “princes” in your life?
I couldn’t get that question out of my head.

Fancy degrees from respectable institutions, high flying career, driving luxury cars, living in a decent neighbourhood where everyone is somebody of importance, married and living with great kids with a dream house or a cosy apartment…
What are the “princes” in your life?
The “princes” are attractive, dependable and enticing forces that surround our lives.
From medical care to medical insurances to educational, economic, government or technological advancements etc. many of us have more confidence in these setups than in Christ. Look around the nations from highly developed to very poor countries one thing is common. Sin, wickedness, lawlessness and abominations continue to thrive in them.
Man-made systems have built falseness around us.
Do you see how these systems have failed and will continually fail us?
Everything in the world systems is shaking. Nothing is to be trusted. What are the “princes” in your life?
The future is unknown no matter how comfortable we get today, trusting in comfort is like trusting in a quicksand.
Are you standing on sinking sand?
There are many caution signs in today’s study. I took some time to collect scriptures that address quicksand areas we may be experiencing.
To trust yourself is failing even before you began. It is good to have certificates, awards, knowledge and skills but it is not advisable to believe “we are” because of our achievements.
We should never glory in them. Proverbs 3:5, James 4:14-16, Galatians 6:14
Those that trust in the Lord are protected. There is no place safe except in Christ. Proverbs 29:25, Proverbs 30:5
Those that fear man are entrapped. Who are you afraid of? The fear of man drives further away from trusting God. Never be afraid of what any man can do but fear God. Psalm 27:1-3, Proverbs 29:25
People and Systems will always fail us. Can you remember how many times people have failed you? It is time to turn to the Lord for help. Psalm 146:3, Isaiah 31:1-3, Isaiah 30:2-3
Vanity is deceitful and Comfort fails. We like comfort and riches. In fact they are enticing drawing us to ease. The Word of the Lord nudges us here in Job 15:31 and Amos 6:1
God’s Ways are perfect. Whatever God has for us is for our own good. 2Samuel 22:31
Is there quicksand in your life? It is time to get unstuck before it drowns you.
There is no better place to find help other than in Jesus. Like the old hymn says, all other ground is sinking sand.
On Christ the Solid Rock I stand.
All other ground is sinking sand.
Christ is the rock that will never fail us.
Prayer Prompt: Pray for God to show you the “princes” in your life. Ask the Lord to expose your heart to the truth and teach your heart to hold on to Him and not trust the “princes”.
