It’s the Little Things

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray”.

I smile every time I hear that song! It reminds me of the hours spent rocking and singing to my firstborn. I sang this song to him many a long sleepless night, through teething and colic, and the growing pains of a toddler. It has been our “special” song for almost 30 years.

I was wandering through Hobby Lobby the other day (oh yeah!) and I came across this ceramic spoon rest with the title to that song printed across the top. I stopped and smiled at the memory of my curly-haired little boy with his little hand stroking my hair as I sang to him. On a whim, I put it in my shopping cart.

You see, that little boy is almost 30 years old. He is an independent adult with an awesome career and a bright future. He has an adorable “bachelor pad” in Hollywood. He is definitely no longer that little toddler, singing along with his mommy. But I reasoned with myself that since he loves to cook, he could certainly use a spoon rest….right? And besides, his kitchen is in the back of his apartment, so it’s not like that spoon rest would be on display for all to see….right?

My son visited me over the weekend. I called him aside one day and told him I had a gift for him. Before he opened it, I told him it was for the kitchen, and not to worry, it wouldn’t be something that everyone would notice. I didn’t want him to feel embarrassed by this spoon rest with a silly song from his childhood. After all…he’s a “macho grownup” now. (When did this happen?)

He opened up his gift and a smile spread across his face. He looked at me and said, “I remember when you used to sing this to me, Mom.”

He also told me he was going to display it proudly on his stove, and he didn’t care what anyone said. He gave me a huge hug and told me he loved me. So, of course, I fell in love with his heart all over again.

God gives us these special moments with our children.

He gives us the privilege of creating sweet, precious memories with them that last a lifetime.

He gives us those treasured nuggets of time that cannot be replaced.

My son will be a daddy someday. I am pretty sure he will have a special song to sing to his babies. And I’m pretty sure the lyrics will include something about sunshine!

Thank you Jesus for this gift of motherhood! Be blessed!
