It is an honour to have Lisa Kimrey, author of The Self-care Impact: Motivation and Inspiration for Wellness. She has been a nurse for 28 years and finds joy through helping people improve their self-care so they can feel better and serve the Lord at their highest capacity.
Today she talks to us about Biblical Self Care.
Lisa writes……
Are you a Christian mom?
Do you take good care of yourself?
Did you know that thrive as moms when we follow what the Bible says about self-care?
Being a mom is no easy task.
Thankfully, we can find guidance for Biblical self-care for moms early in Scripture.
Genesis 1:27 reads, “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (NLT).
This verse tells us that we are created in the image of God.
In the Hebrew language, the word ‘image’ translates to reflection or shadow. The concepts in Hebrew stress the function of the word, not the form.
As a result, Scripture confirms God creates us with His purpose in mind, which shows why our self-care is relevant and critical as a Christian.
Our self-care affects us spiritually!
It doesn’t just impact us physically and emotionally.
How do you view Self-Care? Here are four valuable lessons to apply to how we view our self-care.
Biblical Self-care for Moms – We are Worthy
This first lesson applies to our mindset.
It’s so tempting to put our needs last as a mom! There will always be barriers to performing self-care, however, we can’t let the enemy convince us that we are not worthy of self-care.
Each of us is worthy of self-care.
Therefore, to live as a reflection of God – in the way we believe, think, or act – we should take care of our mind & body (our temple) not just to be well, but because of the way God created us – in His image.
Biblical Self-care for Moms Allows Us to Bring God into Every Part of Our Life
Our presence on earth is more about God than us!
As a result, we need to stay focused on God because something amazing happens when we focus on Him instead of ourselves.
We see ways to actively live out our faith and experience the goodness of obedience.
Obedience to God is the catalyst for seeing other people’s needs. After we see the needs of others, we know the value of serving others.
And, in response to our obedience, God delivers on His promises of wellness that are listed throughout scripture.
The promises include assisting us with our everyday needs of survival, wisdom, guidance, comfort, strength, protection, and, even at times, healing.
It helps us understand how to bring glory to God through every part of our life, including our self-care.
Self-care Can Honor God
Our God IS the moral authority.
He IS God!
God IS the flowing power to transform human life according to His divine intention.
He CAN change our lives!
We can find Scripture where God tells us how we can begin to let Him change us.
Romans 12: 1 reads, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (NLT).
God uses this verse to instruct us to bring our spiritual worship into every part of our lives.
That is to say because we’re created in the image of God, we are spiritual beings!
In the same vein, when we follow God’s request and offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, our self-care is included. Therefore, we should change how we think and care for our bodies and our self-care.
As I wrote about in my Bible study: The Self-care Impact: Motivation and Inspiration for Wellness, let’s not take care of ourselves just to be healthy or well. Let’s take care of ourselves as a way to honor God.
We Need God
Being a mom is all-consuming. In fact, the time spent taking care of our children and family is likely one of the top reasons we struggle with our self-care!
And, as Christian moms, we need God’s blessing in Christ, the promise of the Spirit who dwells within us as a believer.
It’s through the Spirit that we can experience a relationship with God in an intimate and personal way, and have access to the power and strength of God to complete the tasks we’re asked to do.
Many of us Christian moms are fatigued – even exhausted – while serving through our God-designed purpose.
We miss the fact that we need God’s help to be capable of serving at our optimum capability.
We need God forever and in everything we do. We are weak without Him and cannot effectively complete our spiritual mission on our own human strength.
Even when we take care of our children.
So, we need to cling to that mindset – we need to realize we need God every day. God wants us to continue to know and understand that we NEED Him while serving as a mom.
In conclusion, as Christian moms, we flourish when we follow what the Bible says about self-care.
We flourish when we:
*Understand we are worthy of self-care
*Bring God into every part of our life
*Honor God with our self-care
*Understand we need God
