Get the previous two summaries: 1 Samuel HERE and HERE.
King Saul was always the striking figure, admired for his looks.
He fixated on every word, action, and opinion swirling around him.
A relentless people-pleaser, he chose the crowd over his Creator every time.
That weakness snatched the Kingdom from his hands.
When God gives us a privilege,
we should be mindful to keep it.
How do we keep it?
Through undeterred obedience.
Trying to please everyone will cost you far more than you ever imagined.
Each role—the prophet, the King, the priest—has its place. Saul rushed ahead, crossing lines he should not have.
Three attitudes tipped Saul off balance.
–> What he saw (he was losing popularity); maybe he heard whispers
–> He was impatient
A quick thought: It is risky to believe God is slow to respond to your needs.
—>He was concerned with his enemy’s move (If you focus on what God has said…you will see less of the enemy).
Sometimes God tests us. Saul stumbled badly on his very first assignment.
Whenever you step outside God’s will, you force your own way, just as Saul confessed to Samuel.
Sisters,
understand your calling,
your assignment,
your purpose…
know what God has said to you and stay there.
One wrong move from Saul, and he missed…it was game over. (1 Samuel 13:14).
From that moment, his mistakes multiplied. Watch as the story unravels in the chapters ahead.
Another instruction: King Saul disobeys yet again
When God gives you a mandate, execute it completely.
Saul’s disobedience made God regret choosing him.
Greed consumed him, and he became drunk on position, power, and wealth (see verses 9-11).
When Saul faced Samuel, he wrapped himself in perfect words, hoping to hide his faults.
He believed that offering a sacrifice in disobedience would win him applause.
Picture Samuel’s heart sinking in disappointment.
You can’t bribe God with proceeds of sin.
God is not man.
He weighs the content of our hearts.
Deceivers can recite every religious phrase, yet their hearts wander far from their words.
Samuel asked him to recall how God chose him and how far he had brought him (verse 17).
Still, Saul’s heart brimmed with pride.
He became stubborn and fiercely defensive, a lost cause in every sense.
Ponder On this:
Do you always feel you are right?
Are you quick to your own defence?
Saul’s downfall was paved by his many flaws—chief among them, rebellion and stubbornness.
For a leader, disobedience to God is dangerous.
His pride grew from his need to look good before others.
He lived to please people, time and again.
Even after being confronted, Saul begged Samuel to stand by him, desperate to keep up appearances before the people.
What!
What should he have done?
I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God. After I strayed, I repented; after I came to understand, I beat my breast. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’ Jeremiah 31:18-19
If he had repented as Scripture says in 2 Chronicles 7:14, something could have been done for him.
Instead, he bristled with defensiveness, anxiety, and self-righteousness.
As I studied, I saw that some people pour all their energy into appearances, never seeking what is genuine.
Ponder: When God gives you an assignment, do you care most about what people think of you?
In Saul’s case, the repercussion was heavy.
See chapter 15:25-29
He fretted over his followers’ opinions. His actions whispered, ‘Let’s keep up the act so they will still respect me.’ He chose the mask of appearance over true repentance.
