4 Ways to Guide Your Kids Through Prayers

Praying” is what I learnt from my grandma.

She would perch on her bed, even in the stillness of early morning, softly calling out each of our names and those of others in prayer. What touched my young heart most was her unwavering consistency and gentle patience as she prayed.

Honestly, I used to wonder why she prayed for absolutely everything and everyone. Everything! Now that I am older, I understand the wisdom in lifting our worries in prayer instead of letting them fester or simply complaining.

Why should we pray for others?

It is Our Responsibility. Praying for others is an important responsibility for every Christian and a fulfilment of the gospel. Apostle Paul, in several instances, prayed for others and also acknowledged or requested their own prayers. See these verses

Romans 1:9, 2 Corinthians 1:11, Colossians 1:3, I Thessalonians 5:25

And,

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another,
that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth
much.”

James 5:16

We all need to pray for friends.

Praying for others reveals a heart full of compassion. Time and again, Jesus prayed for people to be healed or set free, always moved by deep compassion.
Compassion urges us to move beyond simple pity or concern and into a true desire to help. And what better way to begin showing compassion than by lifting others up in prayer?

Praying for others is a selfless act. When you do this, your focus shifts from yourself to your brother or sister in faith.

Although we are still learning and growing, here are a few tips that have truly helped us along the way.

4 Ways To Teach Your Kids To Pray For Others

– Praying with your children. We model prayer to our children when we pray with them. Praying together gives your children the special chance to listen and learn.

– Encourage them to pray on their own while you listen. Listening gives you ample opportunity to hear their heart and fine-tune it until they can pray unaided.

-Tell them why. Let us move beyond treating prayer for others as a duty. Back it up with the biblical basis for doing so and practical examples too.

Share a scripture and explain why it is important for us to pray for others. My favourite example is when the church prayed for Peter’s release.

You can share a personal testimony with your kids too.

– Prayer Journal. Ask your children to write the names of those they would like to pray for in a journal. You may write specific prayer requests alongside the names of those in the prayer journal.

It can be fun to divide the names across the days of the week, so each day your children have someone special to pray for.

Are your kids praying for others? Please share how you taught them.
