Social media’s influence is everywhere, shaping young minds in ways we sometimes overlook. As a Christian parent, I see firsthand how easily kids absorb what surrounds them, especially online.
Social networking sparks lively debates among my teenage Sunday school kids. I often find it challenging to show them how open they are to strangers and unfamiliar ideas online. Guiding them requires a wise and thoughtful approach.
So I did!
Important Discussions you should have with your kids about social media;
We settled into crucial discussions. Our talk was based on:
a. Understand what you need to know about the tool in your hand
b. Who and what would be affected by my choices and words on social media
c. Identifying priorities and when to unplug
d. Basic rules to help you keep safe on the internet
What Can Parents Do
- Set Limits: In a world where appearances seem to matter most, young children can quickly be swept up by the charm of a friendly stranger on social networks.
- Monitor gadgets: Far too often we hear heartbreaking stories of child pornography, cyber-sex, and stalking that lead to emotional breakdowns and sometimes suicide. You need to ensure your child is protected. Use parental controls for websites, computers, and television programs and video programs.
- School Board: I often encourage schools’ decision to disallow phones, tablets, and similar devices to minimise distractions. Here in Nigeria, this is possible.
Let’s remember our calling to guide and nurture our children as God intends. Now is the moment to seek the Holy Spirit’s wisdom to become better parents and teachers for our kids.
