4 Pitfalls in Goal Setting to Avoid

A busy mama poured out her frustrations about the endless daily grind, feeling like her efforts rarely add up to real productivity.

“Yes, I want to contribute to my local church, learn a new skill, start a small business, join the gym, join art classes, etc., but I barely have enough time to finish my house chores”.

The constant pull between womanhood, motherhood, and wifehood is real. True fulfilment comes from embracing every part of who we are.

Before being a wife or a mom, you are first and foremost a woman—an individual with your own unique purpose.

With the end of the year approaching, these last few months offer a fresh chance to strategise, make changes, finish tasks, and set new goals. Trust me, as a wife and mom, I know how tough it is—your plans always seem to include everyone else’s needs too.

I am sharing this special mini-series from one momma’s heart to another. Take a look at the earlier entries…

Now, let’s dive into the changes and adjustments you are ready to embrace.

Before a man plans to build a house, he must first decide what sort of a house would suit his needs.

Get a fresh writing pad or journal.

  • Write out five experiences that bogged you down this year.
  • Did you face disappointments this year? Did certain attitudes contribute to them?
  • Write out five successes you enjoyed this year. What contributed to these achievements?

The key to making meaningful changes is to be specific about the experiences and lessons you’ve had this year. This clarity will guide you toward the changes that truly matter.

Focus on things you can change.

Now that you are ready to set your goals for the End of the Year, here are 4 Pitfalls to avoid

Stay positive, but keep your goals realistic. Remember, starting small is often the wisest choice. Too many goals at once can be overwhelming. Focus on your top priorities and set clear timelines.

For instance, Jessica is afraid to speak in front of a group. Public Speaking is something she longs to do, but she needs to overcome her fears. She sets out to take lessons, read books and get a few speaking gigs.

Steer clear of competition. I have met people who chase goals simply because others are doing the same. Set goals that reflect your own dreams, not someone else’s plans. Don’t pursue a medical degree just because your friends are.

Recognise your uniqueness. I am a wife, a mom, and I juggle many roles too. When setting goals, remember to include your real-life commitments. Your family, finances, and location are uniquely yours.

Embrace your unique situation as you write your goals. Ignoring your individuality can create obstacles, leading to frustration and even causing you to give up on your plans.

Stay determined to achieve your goals. I have met people who doubt their own dreams. Believe in the goals you set for yourself—they will drive your actions. Trust that you can find success, no matter what.

Don’t neglect other areas of your life. Dear friend, you serve in many roles—wife, mom, sister, friend, and colleague. It’s easy to overlook some parts of your life when setting goals. Make sure you include every area, and remember: your War-room matters too.

Most people get bogged down trying to achieve their goals because it feels overwhelming, vague and lacks clear-cut direction on how to achieve them.

Be intentional about the goals you set for yourself.
