The scriptures speak firmly on the importance of self control. In today’s study we do a verse study to help us gain insight.

What should be our response to internal pressure, frustration and general lashing out that we often feel when we are tired, fed up or easily angered?

Take some time to write this scripture out James 1:9

Hear quickly– The verse encourages us to pursue intentional listening over presumption. I know I often fall into the trap of presuming I know where the speaker is hgoing. This simply means I lose out on important phrases, cues or even gestures that may add some meaning to what their saying.

Listen again – to be sure you didn’t miss out on relevant details

Listen slowly – carefully ask to rehash key points

Listen with your heart – compassion over sincere mistakes

Listen to understand the point of view of the speaker- what are they trying to say to me?

Listen with empathy – what would I do if I in this position?

Listen to tie up loose ends –Is there content for me in this message? Is there something to straighten out?

There’s a reason we’ve got two ears and one mouth. Emphasis on double listen over speaking.

Speaking slowly – After taking thoughtful consideration of the matter, take time to choose words. Over time this has helped me manage possible melt downs or regrettable words. This is good practice if you are spontaneous and easily excited.

I avoid giving responses to a dicey situation and when prompted to respond, I decline for later. This allows me time to process what I have heard and consider options, consequences and intentions before I give my response.

However some situations demand an immediate response. Therefore, we need to be guided with our choose of vocabulary and the way we structure them so our listener understands clearly where we are. If you have the Prayer tool, you will find the workbook helpful.

Not with anger – if we have done the first two then tendency to give an angry response becomes minimal. Sometimes, anger ensued when we have not listened enough, or given empathy or considered other options to our responses.

God help us be wiser.

I’d love for us to examine this scripture 1 Corinthians 9: 24-25

Our aim is for the incorruptible crown.  We are living expressions of God’s love and we fight off the enemy to lay hold of the crown. The enemy presents temptations to sway us and anger, pride, bitterness are all little foxes that can mar the vine.

Dear sister, we need to watch out for little things that may serve as deterrents.

How can we take hold of the crown of life promised?

Bible Reading: James 1:12 Revelation 3:11, 1 Timothy 6:12

Let’s do a Verse Study on 1 Corinthians 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.

Berean Literal Bible Translation – Now everyone striving controls himself in all things; then indeed they, that they might receive a perishable crown; but we, an imperishable.

control in all things” – not reserved for some aspects of our lives. You see why we must intentionally fight off that anger that wants to ruin our joy.

Our crown depends on it.

We need self-control in Our parenting, when offenses against us rise, our relationships with other people, marriage, handling our past, etc
